4.6 Shading Lights

At the end of the previous step, the four selected lights should have been configured as Playfair-encoded and the Light Properties Appearance Tab should have been selected as shown below:

Step 4.6 Initial Image

In Step 1 we decided to use shading to distinguish the Playfair-encoded lights and we will change the relevant setting to achieve this. Sympathy offers several ways of changing a light's appearance - some apply to both blank and solution grid, some only to the solution:

To shade the selected lights for the solver, we therefore need to change the Background color setting. Click on the rectangular button to the right of the Background color: label to choose the color. The Background color dialog should appear as shown below:

Step 4.6 Intermediate Image

Select a gray color as shown above and click on OK to accept the new color setting. The color of the button to the right of the Background color: label should change to indicate the new setting, as shown below:

Step 4.6 Final Image

Note also that there is a check to the left of the Background color: label. This indicates that the property has been changed from the default for the selected lights. As with all properties, you can go back to the default setting by unchecking the box.

When you have changed the Background color setting as shown above, click on the Close button to dismiss the Light Properties dialog. You should see that the Playfair-encoded lights are shaded, as shown as the start of the next step.
